Notes on SOB Charging from an early user

This Page

Charging and download through separate cables

Deployment

  • As close as possible to station time, turn off the power supply output.
  • Disconnect the charging cable and replace the battery pack cable, taking care that everything is dry and there is a film of grease, but no excess goop. Make sure all the air has been popped out of the connection. Be VERY GENTLE in tightening the collar–the threads will strip with very little torque.
  • Back in the lab, run through the deployment sequence as usual.
  • Disconnect the data cable and dummy it off as usual.

Recovery

  • Connect the data dump cable as usual.

  • Do not turn on the power.

  • Dump the data as usual.

  • As soon as possible after the data dump has finished, put the profiler to sleep, disconnect the battery pack cable at the battery pack, and replace it with the charging cable.

    • before changing connections, rinse and dry the connectors, cable, and general vicinity
    • Protect the end of the battery pack cable with a plastic bag
    • When dumping water from the bottles, have someone hold up the bag-covered cable end so that it stays dry.
  • After connecting the charging cable, turn on the power supply output.

General note: The big difference with this procedure, apart from the extra fuss with the connections, is that there is much less time for the battery to charge. It should still be adequate if the data dump is begun promptly after the end of the station, the charging is begun promptly after the end of the data dump, and the deployment is begun close to the station start time. To help keep the charge rate up, try using 59V instead of 58V.
