Introduction

Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) measure Doppler velocities along their beams beneath the ship on which they are mounted. Combined with heading and position, one can derive ocean currents in vertical profiles that extend 50m-1000m below the ship (range depends on instrument frequency). Almost all the ADCPS mounted on ships are manufactured by Teledyne R.D. Instruments. TRDI provides a data acquisition system, "VmDAS", which runs on most of the IMR ships.

Software ("CODAS") written at the University of Hawaii was designed to perform the steps necessary to turn raw ADCP data into ocean currents. CODAS processing provides the ability to automate a first look at historical data collected by VmDAS on board IMR (Norway's Institute for Marine Research) vessels. This web site shows a "first cut" look at some of these cruises.

Since each cruise generates about 1Gb/week, the data volume was large. We selected a subset comprising the averaged data (LTA) as a good compromise between size and information. IMR provided 9 years of LTA data for this experiment. The data from 2010 were problematic, so they were excluded from this first attempt. Data from 8 years (2011-2018) and 4 ships were used, totalling 154 cruises.

Details

For an LTA dataset, CODAS provides an automated mechanism to load the data into a CODAS processing framework and produce netCDF data files, figures, diagnostics, and metadata about the LTA files, to help a scientists decide which cruises to prioritize in the final processing stages. Further stages might include single-ping processing and calibration, but always include manual editing. VmDAS can be very uncivilized; it is possible that additional software tools would have to be written. If the automated generation of the assessment products fails, that is also useful, as it usually indicates a fundamental problem with the dataset.

This web page shows the products of the automated CODAS assessment stage for LTA data and try to make it a useful way to both evaluate the data and showcase the power of the CODAS tools. Each cruise must be evaluated to be able to effectively allocate resources to bring the data up to science-ready quality.

CODAS processing is a free, documented, and supported, open source toolbox for the steps outlined above. Software can be installed on Mac or Linux machines, or can be run via a virtual computer (also a free download).

Looking ahead

UHDAS is a shipboard ADCP acquisition system developed at the University of Hawaii; CODAS is the processing framework used by UHDAS. UHDAS is in use on all ships in the U.S. Academic research fleet, on all the NOAA sFisheries ships, and a handful of other international or private vessels, including IMR's Kristine Bonnevie. Since CODAS processing is already run automatically at sea as part of the UHDAS system, and since data snippets and settings are viewed daily by the UHDAS Team, the data are already of higher quality and closer to science-ready than the VmDAS data. The goal is to have the preliminary automated processing done by the UHDAS system be as close to "science-ready" as possible.

The Kristine Bonnevie CODAS datasets are ready for the same evaluation as soon as the cruise is over. The 4-5Gb of ADCP data from the cruise can be archived, but the 100Mb of processed data, figures, and diagnostics, can be kept alive on a spinning disk for convenient assessment.
