2.6.5. Installing TopographyΒΆ

For processing, editing, and visualization we need topography data; we will use Etopo1.

There are two steps:

  1. download the topography

For historical reasons, the topography resides in a directory called topog, adjacent to your CODAS programs. In the example, that would be /home/adcpcode/topog. You will have to make that directory and one inside it called etopo.

    That would mean you have

    /home/adcpcode/programs

    and

    /home/adcpcode/topog/etopo

    Now

    • change directories to /home/adcpcode/topo/etopo (in the example above):

      cd /home/adcpcode/topog/etopo

    • download this file

    ftp://currents.soest.hawaii.edu/pub/outgoing/etopo1_for_pycurrents.zip

    • and unzip it into /home/adcpcode/topog/etopo.

You should have something like this in the etopo directory:

    etopo1_ice_g_i2.bin
    etopo1_ice_g_i2.hdr
    etopo1_ice_g_i2_s3.bin
    etopo1_ice_g_i2_s9.bin

  2. install the topography (so it is consistent with your other code)

We need to move or link the topog directory so the python code can find it.

For OSX or Linux (Ubuntu) we can symbolically link the topog directory into the correct location.

For OSX Anaconda:

cd
cd miniconda3 # wherever your miniconda environments are
sudo ln -s /home/adcpcode/topog .

For Windows Anaconda, you would have to move or copy the topog directory into your root Anaconda directory.

For Linux:

cd /usr/local
ln -s /home/adcpcode/topog .

We are only using topography to make the plots more legible, so there may not be any reason to manually create newer topography. But if that was necessary, follow these instructions. The version number of ETOPO products keeps changing, so you may need to adapt.
