“Neighbors” is an editing parameter which is useful in regions of questionable data, where only a fraction of the profiles are still “good”. If there is reason to doubt isolated profiles, then you can remove them by requiring some number of “neighbors”. A requirement of 1 neighbor means that a profile must have a neighbor on each side (i.e. there should be three adjacent profiles) in order to be accepted. This parameter was designed for use in editing ADCP data when the ship was in ice, and is a way of ruthlessly eliminating unsupported profiles.
Due to its implimentation, requiring neighbors also expands holes. If you have profiles which have been flagged due to jitter, and you require “neighbors” greater than zero, gautoedit will remove that many profiles from each side of the hole, thus widening the gap (increasing the number of profiles flagged). If the you really wanted to get rid of the profiles that were flagged, this is a good way of widening the gap by a known number of profiles without changing the jitter criterion.
