2.8.3. Scale Factor (applied as “rotate_amplitude”)

This figure shows the effect of a scale factor of 1.02 on the ocean velocities. Before the scale factor is applied, the ocean velocities exhibit a vertically-coherent “stripe” of a different value when the ship is underway. After applying the scale factor, it is much more difficult to guess when the ship is moving by looking at the ocean velocities.

Two things to note:

  1. different color pallettes can make it easier or harder to see the stripes

  2. although the stripes are subtle, the error is about 10cm/s
